Dancing raisins - Junior Infants

Junior Infants began by dancing the Hokey Pokey. We then discussed how we dance and how our bodies move in order to dance. Our class were asked if raisins could dance and they all laughed thinking there was no way this was possible. We decided to carry out an experiment to test if it was possible. The children were shown the resources we were going to use to carry out our experiment and brainstormed how we could use these to make the raisins dance.

We dropped some raisins into the glass of water and some into the fizzy drink. At first, both sets of raisins stayed at the bottom of each glass. Suddenly, we noticed the raisins in the fizzy drink moving and dancing in the glass.
When the raisins were at the bottom of the glass of lemonade they collected bubbles of carbon dioxide so the raisins and bubbles were lighter than the drink so they rose to the top. The gas bubbles burst at the top and the raisins sank again. This happened repeatedly and looked like the raisins were dancing. The raisins in the water stayed at the bottom of their glass and didn't dance.
