How plants drink - Junior Infants

Junior Infants were very excited to investigate how plants drink. We used white flowers and food colouring to test if our plants absorb liquid through their stems.

Firstly, we decided to use four different colours of food colouring: red, yellow, green and blue. We filled each jar with water and added food colouring. We marked the water level on each jar with a marker. Our class predicted what would happen and recorded these on our experiment sheets. Junior Infants were very excited and couldn’t wait to check to check our flowers the next day to see if there were any changes in the colour of the flower’s petals.

The next day, we noticed some of the petals had started to change colour. From our observations we noted that the red and blue were more obvious and we came to the conclusion that this was because they were more concentrated and darker and so would be easier to see. As the week went on we noticed the petals getting darker in colour and the water had gone below our mark which showed us that the flowers were drinking through their stems.
