In 2nd and 3rd class the children are learning all about healthy eating and the different food groups. For our science experiment, we concentrated on one food group in particular and we brainstormed what types of food consist of starch. In this experiment, the children used iodine as an indicator to see if the food or objects consisted of starch. If the object or food turned a blue-black colour this showed us starch was present. They tested paper, kitchen paper, pasta, potatoes, biscuits, cheese and recorded their guesses and results each time.
The children in pairs tested the different food using the iodine and the dropper. The children really enjoyed the testing and working in pairs. This was
a fun experiment.
